Where the California excels
Staying honest works better than knocking it: the California is a factory product with excellent finishing, a dealer network, warranty and a known strong resale value. If that's top of your list, you're in good hands and don't need to look further.
What people end up telling us
The complaint we hear most often isn't about quality, but about layout. The lower sleeping area is a folding bench. That means making it up every evening and clearing it away every morning, and it means you can't lie down during the day without giving up the seating area.
The second point is the kitchen. Two burners and a small cooling compartment are fine for coffee and pasta, but not for two weeks of proper family cooking. The Wally-Van has a 50-litre fridge with a freezer compartment, and the kitchen turns outward so you cook in the sun instead of inside the van.
The third point is storage. Under the Classic's crosswise bed, there's a garage that fits more than twelve crates — bikes, SUP boards, tent and wet gear included.
Same size, different approach
Importantly, you don't lose out on dimensions. The Wally-Van is built, among others, on the long-wheelbase VW Transporter and stays under 2 metres tall with the pop-top folded down. Parking garages, ferries, narrow village roads — all no problem, just like with a California.
You can also supply your own van, including a used one. That lets you decide the balance between your vehicle budget and interior budget.

- How often do you go away for short trips? The more often, the more a fixed bed matters.
- Do you really cook in the camper, or do you eat out?
- Do you bring bikes or watersports gear?
