Wally-Van vs. other compact camper concepts

The starting point: never converting again

Most compact campers combine functions: the seating area becomes the bed at night, or the bed has to be folded out. The Wally-Van is designed around one principle: bed, seating area and kitchen are all available at the same time, always. You get in, you get out, you sleep without a single conversion step.

That requires a long wheelbase and a well-thought-out layout, and it's the main reason the interior looks the way it does.

Compared to a Ventje

A Ventje is a beautifully finished, characterful van with lovely flexible lounge benches and a generous kitchen by the tailgate. If you want to sleep downstairs you do have to convert the lounge bench and sleep on the bench cushions. Most of the storage is then under the made-up bed (inside those benches). If you always sleep in the upper bed, bear in mind that the mattress is relatively thin, you have to climb into a high bed and then turn to get your legs the right way round. Finally, that lovely big kitchen means there is no access to the storage/garage from the tailgate. Barbecues, dirty mats, levelling blocks and the like therefore have to be stored in the living area. In short: if the beautiful kitchen and lounge bench are decisive for you, the Ventje is a fine camper.

Choose the Wally-Van if you want a truly fixed bed of over 2 metres that stays made up, plus a spacious garage. That's the difference in one sentence: atmosphere and compactness versus permanent availability and storage space.

Compared to a VW California

The California is the best-known compact camper in the Netherlands, with a well-earned reputation for resale value and factory finish. However, the interior is a folding bench that becomes a bed at night, and the kitchen is small.

Choose the Wally-Van if you would rather not convert anything, if you want a full kitchen you can use both inside and outside, with a 50L fridge with freezer compartment, or if you want to transport and sleep four people really comfortably. Choose the California if factory warranty and resale value top your list.

Compared to a Tonke

Tonke builds characterful, innovative campers with a lot of wood and craftsmanship. Both the Tonke EQV and the new Basecamp are beautifully finished. The EQV uses a sofa bed downstairs, so you either sleep upstairs (see the notes on the upper bed under Ventje) or convert the sofa into a bed downstairs. With the Basecamp the same applies to sleeping upstairs and downstairs. On top of that there is no storage/garage accessible from the tailgate, so dirty ground mats, levelling blocks, the barbecue and the chairs and tables end up in the aisle. In short: beautiful campers, but think carefully about whether their design choices match the way you use a camper.

Choose the Wally-Van and you get a Scandinavian wooden feel with a fixed downstairs bed, an indoor and outdoor kitchen, a spacious garage accessible from the tailgate for all your gear, and a roomy fixed seating area.
