There are many good compact campers in the Netherlands. Ventje, the VW California and Tonke are the names that come up most often when people visit us. Below we honestly explain how they differ — including where another concept might suit you better.
The starting point: never converting again
Most compact campers combine functions: the seating area becomes the bed at night, or the bed has to be folded out. The Wally-Van is designed around one principle: bed, seating area and kitchen are all available at the same time, always. You get in, you get out, you sleep — without a single conversion step.
That requires a long wheelbase and a well-thought-out layout, and it's the main reason the interior looks the way it does.
Compared to a Ventje
A Ventje is a beautifully finished, characterful van with its own recognisable style — usually on a shorter base and with a seating/sleeping combination. If you mostly take short trips and love that look, you'll be well suited there.
Choose the Wally-Van if you want a truly fixed bed of over 2 metres that stays made up, plus a garage that fits more than twelve crates. That's the difference in one sentence: atmosphere and compactness versus permanent availability and storage space.
Compared to a VW California
The California is the best-known compact camper in the Netherlands, with a well-earned reputation for resale value and factory finish. However, the interior is a folding bench that becomes a bed at night, and the kitchen is small.
Choose the Wally-Van if converting doesn't appeal to you, if you want a full kitchen with a 50L fridge with freezer compartment, or if you want to transport and sleep four people really comfortably. Choose the California if factory warranty and resale value top your list.
Compared to a Tonke
Tonke builds characterful campers with a lot of wood and craftsmanship, usually on a larger chassis. You get more space and often a fixed wet room — but also more length and height, and therefore paid storage instead of your own driveway.
Choose the Wally-Van if you do want that Scandinavian, wooden atmosphere but want to stay within the dimensions of a regular car.
