The price of a camper is almost never a single amount. It's made up of the base vehicle, the conversion, the options and the costs that follow afterwards. Below we set out these items so you have a realistic picture of what a compact camper really costs.
1. The base vehicle
The biggest variable is the van itself. A used VW Transporter T6 with a long wheelbase costs considerably less than a new T7 or an electric Ford Transit Custom. You can have us source a van, or supply your own — in that case we first carry out a technical inspection.
With a used van, pay particular attention to mileage, maintenance history and rust. A cheap van that needs a new engine after three years wasn't a cheap van after all.
2. The conversion
The conversion is the fixed part: insulation, panelling, the fixed bed, the kitchen, the seating area with RDW-approved belted seats, electrics with a leisure battery, and the finishing. This is where quality differences between builders show up, and it's what you'll enjoy the longest.

3. The options
Think of a pop-top with an extra double bed, induction instead of gas, a larger battery pack with solar panel, an awning, blackout blinds, a bike rack or a portable toilet with a fixed spot. Options easily account for several thousand euros of difference.
Our advice: choose options based on how you actually travel, not on how you hope to travel. A solar panel is worth its weight in gold if you go off-grid, and unnecessary if you always stay at campsites with power.
4. The costs afterwards
Factor in road tax (for a camper often at the favourable quarter rate with an approved camper fit-out), camper insurance, maintenance, the annual inspection (APK) and possibly storage. With a compact camper in particular, that last item often disappears — it fits on your own driveway.
There's also a figure on the other side: a well-built compact camper holds its value relatively well, and you can rent it out to earn back part of your investment.
