Caravan, folding trailer tent and compact camper are often mentioned in the same breath, but they lead to completely different holidays. The difference isn't in the price, but in how often you change location and how much effort that takes.
Arriving and leaving
With a folding trailer tent, setting up on arrival takes twenty minutes to an hour, and packing up on departure takes just as long — preferably with a dry cloth. A caravan is quicker, but still requires unhitching, levelling and connecting up.
You park a compact camper and you're there. That difference seems small over a two-week stay, but it's decisive if you're doing a road trip and moving on every couple of days.
Driving and manoeuvring
A trailer changes your driving behaviour: reversing into a parking spot, refuelling, narrow mountain roads, ferries and the licence weight limit (a BE licence for heavier combinations). A compact camper is a single five-metre vehicle you can turn around without a second thought.
On the other hand, a caravan or folding trailer tent has one big advantage: you unhitch and keep your car. On a single campsite for two weeks that's convenient — though you'll need a bike to get around the campsite itself.
Space and comfort
For the same money, a caravan offers more square metres and usually a fixed wet room. A folding trailer tent gives the most living space per euro, but is weather-sensitive and requires setting up.
A compact camper offers less floor area, but that area is always immediately available — even on the road, in a car park by a mountain pass, or during a rain shower on the way there.
The year-round argument
Caravans and folding trailer tents sit in storage outside the season and cost money. A compact camper is simply your car for the rest of the year. If you factor in those costs and that usage, you often arrive at a different outcome than a comparison based on purchase price alone.
